Kill Your Tupperware – All Hail IKEA!

by Michael Davis

in Other Stuff, Videos

Behold the finest food storage containers on planet earth. The IKEA 365+ Food Saver. The big deal here is the lids. The containers are available in four sizes, but the lids are all the same size. No more frustrating searches for the one lid that fits. But wait…there’s more plastic perfection.

  • Clear Lids for Easy Identification of Contents
  • Rubberized Easy-Grip Edge
  • Stackable
  • Built-In Steam Vent
  • Dishwasher & Microwave Safe
  • Cost: $2.00 to  $5.00

Finally, don’t let the low price fool you. These tubs are heavy duty. By far the most substantial containers we own. Bravo IKEA! You’re always exceeding our expectations.

This is seriously why IKEA is implementing their plan like a steamroller to take over all of world. Dude, we LOVE anything that we ever get from one of their stores. And honestly, when you compare their prices with the prices of alot of other furniture/home accessory store I think they beat the pants off of anyone.

@ Bunk – IKEA Rocks! When I lived in San Diego it was only 20- minutes away. Now, it’s 2 hours…but well worth the drive.

@ Maria – Like you, we’re also a big fans of IKEA Hacker. We do a bit of that here. We’ve used their closet systems to build a custom designed baby changing station and also use some of their outdoor furniture indoors. We’ll be doing some posts in the future on some specifics. Stay tuned.

We love Ikea too! I just wish there was a location nearer to us – either the Frisco or Round Rock stores are each nearly 7 hours away! So we always make the very most of it when we do go:

Hi Rob,

I just checked out your “IKEA haul”. We have the same dining room table here at the Family Hack house. In fact, we’ll be doing a post in the future about how to design a stylish and kid friendly dining room. That dining table is a key element. Thanks so much for stopping by and for comments.

Best,
Michael

The price looks better than Tupperware. If the quality is at par with Tupperware, then Tupperware has a real competitor. Thanks for sharing, Michael. May want to check it out soon.

@Abel – The quality is definitely better than any Tupperware I’ve used. The container is very sturdy and the design is well thought out.

LOVE LOVE LOVE IKEA. This comment kind of goes along with the plastic bag trashcan for the car. I drive a minivan… yep, sure do. I have an Ikea Rationell Waste Bin, with handles and a lid, that I use for my van. I don’t keep the lid on it, but I use the plastic store bags to line it and I keep it inbetween the driver and passenger seat. It’s $4, and waterproof. I don’t have to worry about tossing something in it that will spill before my next stop. MUCH cheaper than those waterproof containers made for the car.

Great idea Jackie! The next time we’re at IKEA, we’ll have to grab a Rationell Waste Bin. Thanks for sharing, it makes FamilyHack so much better when readers do.

I tried them, didn’t like them. They don’t seal properly and I ended up with stuff all over my fridge. Instead of searching for proper size lids, I searched for proper size containers for my food and really neither Tupperware or these are ideal for this problem. I have had so many Tupperware items replaced at no charge over the years, I buy 5 pieces of IKEA’s stuff and voila the price that I could have paid for a warrantied Tupperware container. Not sure which is better, but for now I am sticking with Tupperware.

This may be heresy, but I really like the Ziploc containers you can buy at the supermarket. They stack well, have multiple sizes that use the same lid, and are heavy duty enough to wash and reuse but cheap enough to give away without a second thought. The seals seem very tight, good enough for freezing or shaking up liquids.

We bought two sizes that use the same lid, got rid of our jumble of tupperware, and have been happier ever since. And they all stack together really neatly when not in use.

@Kirk – We also like the Ziploc containers. They were our choice before we ound IKEA’s. They have a lot of plusses, but the IKEA containers were a bit more rugged and harder to open for a two year old.

I love the idea of universal lids. Most of my plastic leftover-ware is actually Rubbermaid Servin’ Saver, but I did splurge about 12 years ago and buy some “real” Tupperware.

The one thing that sets Tupperware apart from all of these other brands is that they have a lifetime guarantee. There aren’t that many other companies that offer that these days. In terms of use, durability, etc., I’ve had great luck with the Rubbermaid.

And now, I can try Ikea. Thanks!
