My dad put up that rink every winter when I was a kid. He experimented for a few year, but then used the same configuration and lumber for at least 7 years. I think he got a couple years out of each tarp. After the initial setup the yearly cost is under $50.
If you want to see some amazing backyard rinks look for the Canadian home depot contest. You’ll see regulation size backyard rinks complete with boards, benches, and lights. One of these winters I’m going to try painting lines on our ice. I’ll make sure to blog my efforts.
@John – It sounds like we had similar Fathers. Mine was always building some contraption for us kids. From skateboard ramps to custom bicycles…we had a lot of fun with his creations.
