In this video I show you how I use a brilliantly designed and dirt cheap file holderto keep my active projects organized, in view and easy to retrieve. The system also makes working while traveling a breeze.

Very nice — in my days of paper-based files, those would’ve been a godsend (a friend recommended one of those vertical, on-the-desk kind that you mentioned, and it was horrible).

I’ve now migrated to 99% electronic info… in fact, I eliminated all but three file folders from my life a few days ago (well, plus some house stuff that’s in a box in the basement). Everything’s on my computer now, and I love it.

But hey, whatever floats your boat!

Thanks again for sharing, Michael. Your site rocks.

My thought exactly. Why have paper files at all.

Stumbled upon your site and love the simplicity of the idea. I recently converted to GTD system and been successful at it and love the approaches you use by keeping things clean and simple.

Great work – Great Site.

Hi Patrick,

Welcome to the wonderful world of GTD. I’m glad to hear you’ve been having some success with it. It definitely makes my life a lot easier.

Also, thanks for the nice comment. I’m glad you like the idea. I’m constantly refining the ways I work and live. I hope you’ll stop by and share any good ideas you come across in the future.

Best,
Michael

I’ve searched Rubbermaid’s site and can’t find these great little gizmos. Do you know their official name?

Love your site,
Nan

A quick note to say, ‘YOUR SITE ROCKS MY WORLD !!’. Thank you so much for your tips.

I used something like yours some time back, except that I did it with them black binding clips. Then all the travelling made me crazy & I got files misplaced, lost, etc. Drove me nuts. Then I found out the joys of scanning. Still, It took too long to scan page by page, & I still lost my laptop at the airport (or was it the hotel??)

Now, what I do is, use my office copier (which comes with a scanner, which then emails the scan copies to you) to scan a bunch of papers at one go. If they are separate documents, pile the single sheets together as one file & each group of multiple sheets stay as another. I’ve set the email address to one I can access even out of the office (not a problem if you have a VPN configuration where you can access your office network servers & email from the outside). This way, I can have a look at them either in the office or out of it. I’ve tried using online storages, but I find email services like Gmail or Yahoo! are always faster than downloading from an online file storage. This way, I can lose my notebook without worrying about losing my documents with it.

Then again if that happens, I’ve got a bigger problem, don’t I ?

Sounds like you’ve got your system down. Like you I’ve moved to almost totally scanned documents. I no longer use this file folder system. It was great while it lasted though.
